Bob Mintzer has impressed me a lot when he was here in the beginning of the year, and here’s a neat little tip for improvising.
“Well, I’m too old to pimp, and too young to die, so I’m just gon’ keep playin’.”
Over the years I had had the luck to meet a few Jazz-greats over the years. I remember Benny Golson, Sam Rivers, Charlie Mariano and a few more. In all instances I found not only their playing a source of inspiration, but also hearing them telling them stories, basically straight out of Jazz history.
Even though I always enjoyed reading interviews, hearing them straight from the source so to speak is surely something different.
Long story short I finally found a nice podcast featuring interviews with contemporary as well as some of favourite artists of all time. I have only partly caught up with the backlog, but so far the episodes with Joe Henderson and Benny Golson are worth the listen. Especially enjoyed the stories about John Coltrane which Benny had to share. Something that was already fun to listen to when I met him during a workshop many years ago.
